After changing my Windows password, why do I receive a processing error when attempting to login to UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer?
This problem may occur when you select the Encrypt local data option on the Configuration Wizard's Basic or Advanced tabs (see
UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer - Basic Configuration and
UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer - Advanced Configuration), and then later change your Windows password. On Microsoft Windows, only the user who originally encrypted the folders/files (or users designated as recovery agents before the folders/files were encrypted) can view or recover encrypted folders and files. For encrypted folders/files, Windows only recognizes the password that was in effect when the folders/files were originally encrypted. When the password changes, Windows may continue to associate the encrypted folders/files to the original password (resulting in the error).
When this problem occurs, you effectively lose access to your encrypted UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer folders/files.
Preventative measures
1 Decrypt the UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer folder (and all files in it) before changing your Windows password.
For more information, see the Microsoft article “How to remove file or folder encryption in Windows XP” (the article applies to Windows XP, Vista, and 7).
2 Reboot the computer (or log off and then log back in). When you restart UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer, encryption is reapplied against your user profile with the new password.
Recovery procedure
1 When the error occurs, have your site administrator reset your password to its previous value (the value used when the files/folders were originally encrypted).
2 Decrypt the UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer folder (and all files in it). Ensure that all UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer related processes have stopped before doing this. For more information, see the Microsoft article “How to remove file or folder encryption in Windows XP” (the article applies to Windows XP, Vista, and 7).
3 Change your password.
4 Reboot your system. When you restart UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer, encryption is reapplied against your user profile with the new password.
For more information, see the Microsoft article “Best practices for the Encrypting File System” on Windows file/folder encryption behavior, and best practices.
