Using MDM Label Manager with the Translation Utility
MDM Label Manager is designed to be used for configuring the properties of .mdd files for the Translation Utility and other applications. Here are some examples of how you can use MDM Label Manager together with the Translation Utility:
You want to add a new context containing text for CATI interviews. You can do this by creating the new context in MDM Label Manager, setting the source language to read/write, and using the Translation Utility to enter the appropriate text for the context in the source language.
You want to edit the source language in the metadata file to correct some errors. You can do this by setting the properties for this language to read/write, and then editing it using the Translation Utility.
A metadata file contains two languages in addition to the source language, and the translation of one of the languages has been completed. You can set the source language and the completed translation as read-only to prevent accidental overwriting of text.
You have a metadata file in US English, and you want to create a UK English "translation" to reflect the different spellings and terminology required in a few of the questions, but you know that most of the text will be identical in the two versions. You can use the Alternatives setting in MDM Label Manager to specify that the alternative language for UK English is US English. You can then use the Translation Utility to enter UK English text for only those terms that differ in the two versions. All fields that do not contain any UK English text automatically pick up the US English text when viewed in other applications (for example, the Questionnaire Viewer or UNICOM Intelligence Reporter).
