Adding questions to a questionnaire
UNICOM Intelligence Author provides a number of different question types that correspond to the different kinds of information you want to collect. First, decide on the type of question that you want, and then add it into the questionnaire.
Add the first question
In this example, the first question is: “Do you usually drink instant or ground coffee?”
In this case, you want respondents to select one from a predefined set of responses. This is called a single response (sometimes called single choice) question.
1 Click Insert > Question > Single Response, or press Ctrl+F1.
A new single response question is added.
2 Click SingleResponseQuestion, change the name to InstantOrGround, and then type Do you usually drink instant or ground coffee? in the question text field.
To enter the text more quickly, you can copy and paste it from this document.
3 Click in the Responses table, and then type the following responses. Press Enter after the first response to create a new line.
Instant
Ground
4 Press Ctrl+S to save the question in the questionnaire file.
Add a numeric question
The next question is: “How many cups of coffee do you drink in an average day?”
To create a question that requires the respondent to enter a whole number, use the numeric question type.
1 Click Insert > Question > Numeric, or press Ctrl+F7.
2 Change the name to HowMany, and then type How many cups of coffee do you drink in an average day? in the question text field.
3 The answer needs to be in whole cups of coffee, so select Whole Number in the Numeric Type field on the Properties pane.
4 You can also limit the values that respondents can enter. In the Minimum and Maximum fields on the Properties pane on the right of the window, enter 0 and 50.
Add a multiple choice question
The next question is: “Please say which of these coffees you have ever tried.” followed by a list of coffees.
In this question, respondents can select one or more from a predefined set of responses. This is a multiple response question.
1 Click Insert > Question > Multiple Response or press Ctrl+F2.
2 Change the name to DrinkCoffees, and then type Please say which of these coffees you have ever tried in the question text field.
This question and the next question will share the same response list, so for the moment, do not enter any responses.
Add a single choice question
The next question is: “Which of these coffees is your favorite?”, followed by the same list of coffees as the previous question.
In this case, you want respondents to select an answer from a list. This is another single response question.
1 Click Insert > Question > Single Response, or press Ctrl+F1.
2 Change the name to FavoriteCoffee, and then type Which of these types of coffee is your favorite? in the question text field.
As with the previous question, there is no need to enter any responses yet.
Add a question about time
The next question is: “At what time do you have your first cup of coffee of the day?”. A separate question type is available for recording date and time responses.
1 Click Insert > Question > Date/Time, or press Ctrl+F9.
2 Change the name to CoffeeTime, and then type At what time do you have your first cup of coffee of the day? in the question text field.
Add a text question
The next question is: “Please enter your email address”, with a box to record the email information.
The type of question to use when you want respondents to answer in their own words is a text question (sometimes called a verbatim or open end). To create a text question:
1 Click Insert > Question > Text, or press Ctrl+F8.
2 Change the name to Email, and then type Please enter your email address in the question text field.
3 Press Ctrl+S to save the questions that you have created in the questionnaire file.
