Scanning control fields
You insert the scanning control fields when you have finished formatting the questionnaire.
Types of scanning control fields
Adjustment fields
Scanning software requires adjustment fields to identify, de‑skew, and scale forms and to match them to their definition. UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer - Paper/Scan Add‑on inserts an adjustment field containing a cross in each corner of each page of the questionnaire. UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer - Paper/Scan Add‑on can optionally add a fifth cross in a different position on each page. You can define the size and weight of the crosses and their distance from the margin in the UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer - Paper/Scan Add‑on Options dialog.
Recognition fields
These are unique identification numbers that the scanning software uses to identify each page of the questionnaire. You can optionally include recognition fields, and you can define where the recognition fields are to appear on each page in the UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer - Paper/Scan Add‑on Options dialog.
Before you insert the scanning control fields
Before you insert the scanning control fields:
▪Complete all formatting of the questionnaire.
▪If the questionnaires are to be scanned double-sided, select mirror margins.
▪Turn off all of the options in Word that let you view and print hidden text and formatting marks. For example, switch off the option to view hidden text and select the Hide option of the Show/Hide command. Displaying formatting marks and hidden text makes the fields move in relation to each other and the page. If you insert the scanning control fields with the hidden text and formatting marks displayed, the scanning control fields are inserted incorrectly. This can make the scanning of the questionnaires fail.
▪If you want to insert adjustment fields but do not want to insert recognition fields, ensure that the Insert recognition fields box on the General tab of the UNICOM Intelligence Interviewer - Paper/Scan Add‑on Options dialog is not checked.
Changing the formatting of the questionnaire after you insert the scanning controls can make the scanning control fields change position. This can lead to scanning problems caused by a mismatch between the questionnaire and the scanning definitions.
