Adding summary statistics to a grid
Grid questions frequently ask respondents to choose a rating on a predefined scale for a number of products in a list. You can add summary statistics to these questions, for example, a mean to show the average rating, just like you can in any other categorical variable. For more information, see
Adding summary statistics to a categorical variable.
These instructions describe how to create a mean in a grid variable so that it applies to all tables that use the variable. If you want to create the mean in a specific table, see
Creating your first grid table, and then use the Edit Axis dialog instead of the Edit Variable dialog. The steps in the dialog are the same. For more information, see
Edit Axis dialog.
1 In the main UNICOM Intelligence Reporter - Survey Tabulation window, select the Define tab.
2 In the Variable List, expand the grid or loop, and then click the variable that is inside the grid or loop. This variable is often called Column.
3 Click Variables > Edit.
The Edit Variable dialog opens: see
Edit Variable dialog.
4 Select the item in front of which you want the mean to appear. To add the mean at the end, do not select anything.
5 From the menu at the top of the Edit tab, choose Insert.
The Insert Item dialog opens: see
Insert Item dialog.
6 In the list of Available Items, select Mean.
7 Click Add, and then click OK.
This inserts the mean into the list of items on the Edit tab and automatically assigns factors to all of the categories, including user-defined categories, in the list. A factor of 1 is assigned to the first one, a factor of 2 to the second one, and so on. However, you can change the factors if necessary. For more information, see
Adding summary statistics to a categorical variable.
8 Click OK.
The changes will be applied to any existing tables that include the variable next time you populate them (provided you have not used the Edit Axis dialog to specify how the variable is to appear in any of those tables).
