The locking mechanism available in the network version of System Architect will prevent a user of the merge version from opening a network version encyclopedia.

Nothing prevents the network version of System Architect from opening a merge version encyclopedia. However, as mentioned above, the merge version of System Architect cannot open a network encyclopedia unless the Network Administrator removes the lock file from the network version encyclopedia.
