An External symbol is a rectangular symbol that represents an object that sends information or data to the system, or takes information from the system, but is not itself part of the system. A rectangle is used in Yourdon/DeMarco DFDs and on real time diagrams, such as a DFD Ward & Mellor; a square is used in Gane & Sarson DFDs.
