Explorer – Cause-Effect Analysis
The Explorer diagram in System Architect enables on-the-fly visual analysis of the architecture. You build the diagram by running SQL-query reports, to get a visual of what is related to what in the architecture.
There are two types of Explorer diagrams: Network and Landscape. On Network-style Explorer diagrams, a line represents either a direct or calculated relationship between two definitions.
Cause-Effect Analysis
The typical Explorer diagram is a Cause-Effect Analysis viewpoint – you can see what is related to what in the architecture – and some of the relationships can be calculated (not direct – example, draw a line between Capabilities and Systems – based on the fact that a Capability has a relationship to OperationalActivity has a relationship to Process that uses a System).

To create a Cause-Effect Explorer diagram:
1 Create an Explorer diagram of type Network.
2 Select-and-drag the header of a definition (for example, Capability (UAF)) from the Explorer tree onto the diagram. Alternatively, create an Explorer Object report to automatically draw definitions that meet some report criteria (for example – all Capabilities owned by a particular Organization, or all Capabilities that have been added to the architecture in the last 30 days, or all Capabilities enabled by Activities enabled by Systems whose out-of-service date is in the next year).
You can create Explorer Object reports as definitions and drag them onto the diagram from the Explorer tree to run them, or select View > Heatmap Manager and use the Explorer Object report wizard to create and run the report.
3 Create a second set of definitions on the diagram (either dragging a set from the Explorer tree (for example, OperationalActivities) or running a second Explorer Object report.
4 Create an Explorer Relationship report to automatically draw lines between two types of definitions on the diagram.
