Create a new encyclopedia
The permission to create a new encyclopedia from System Architect Catalog Manager (SACM) is assigned to the role of Administrator. The installer of SACM is assigned this role by default. Others need to have it assigned to them before they can create encyclopedias.
Whether you create a new encyclopedia from SACM or from System Architect, you must assign it to Users, and assign the Users one or more roles to the encyclopedia. To open the encyclopedia in System Architect, you or a user needs to create a UDL (Universal Data Locator) file and follow the procedure for opening a new Enterprise encyclopedias.
The type of encyclopedia that is created from SACM is determined by the catalog type currently in use. For example, if the value in your Current Catalog (Type, Server) field is SQL Server, then the encyclopedia you create will be a SQL Server type. Following are the steps to create an encyclopedia in SACM and to open it from System Architect.
Optimized XT Reader Encyclopedias on SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008
When you create an encyclopedia on SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008, the encyclopedia is automatically enabled with Optimized XT Reader. Encyclopedias with the Optimized XT Reader feature enable System Architect XT users to read encyclopedias without launching the System Architect executable, when they are logged in with the Reader mode. Additionally, it enables System Architect to integrate with the System Architect Publishing Engine Document Studio by making encyclopedias available as data sources for that product. This is made possible through a REST interface, which can be queried over HTTP and return XML or MIME format (for diagrams).
Note After you create an encyclopedia from SACM and you add users and add permissions for them, you have to run the Publishing Optimized XT Reader Views command.
To create an encyclopedia from SACM
1 Right-click the root Encyclopedias node, and select New.
2 In the New Encyclopedia dialog, enter a Name and Description (optional) in the corresponding fields.
3 Click OK.
The encyclopedia appears under the root Encyclopedias node and is ready for you to assign it users. The encyclopedia is created with the default configuration settings, which you can change subsequently in System Architect. If you created the encyclopedia on SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008, SACM starts and close System Architect to create the encyclopedia.
To open an encyclopedia created using SACM in System Architect
1 On the File menu, click Open Encyclopedia.
2 In the Open Encyclopedia window, click Connection, and then select the connection to the server on which you created the encyclopedia in SACM. The Encyclopedias on connection field displays all encyclopedias on that server.
3 Select your encyclopedia, and then click OK.
