The View > Symbol Depictions command changes the presentation of all or selected symbols on a diagram.
The option is available when there is a depiction that can be presented.
Names and graphic comments are positioned outside a symbol when turning on a full-body depiction through the Symbol Depictions button. The presented-outside state is remembered when cycling to non-full-body depiction again.
Note A symbol's 'Symbol Depiction' value overrides its definition's 'Definition Depiction' value. These override all other depictions. A symbol's list property depiction overrides a symbol's body depiction and that overrides the definition body depiction which overrides any supertype definition body depiction.
Depiction style examples
Normal
Displays a symbol without any graphical adornment. This is the default view, if another view is not selected.
Depiction
Displays the depiction.
Adornment
Displays the symbol as an icon at the top-right corner.
Note An exception to these behaviors is the BPMN Business Process, where Process symbols display an icon if the Task Type property is specified, in order to comply with BPMN convention.
The BPMN_AllowFullDepictionForProcess configuration switch can alter the depiction style behavior.
BPMN_AllowFullDepictionForProcessr=N
When Display As Task Type is selected for a Process symbol on a Business Process diagram, no depiction is presented. N is the default.
BPMN_AllowFullDepictionForProcessr=Y
When Display As Task Type is selected, a full depiction is presented for a Process symbol on a Business Process diagram if the value of the Task Type has an associated depiction.
Additional Options
Additional options are presented in a sub-menu which become available in certain circumstances.
These can apply to all symbols which can have an alternate depiction. If there is a selection then this will constrain the operation to those selected symbols that can have an alternate depiction.
The following common sub-options are presented when: there are multiple symbol types, these are Explorer diagram symbols, the symbols have no list property with depictions, the symbols have both a list property with depictions and alternate depictions specified.

•Display with Alternate Depiction Without Resizing
•Display with Adornment
•Display with Adornment Without Resizing
•Display Conventionally
•Display Conventionally Without Resizing
The following options are presented when there is a single symbol type and the depiction can be driven by a property:
•Display According to <property > [Without Resizing]
•Adorn With <property> [Without Resizing]
•Display as <symbol type> [Without Resizing]
The following options are presented when the symbol type has a depiction as well as a list property with depictions:
If there are multiple types or these are Explorer symbols, one of the following options will appear based on what is currently being shown:
•Display According to Symbol Type [Without Resizing]
•Display According to Property [Without Resizing]
If there is a single symbol type, one of the following options will appear based on what is currently being shown:
