Generating OV-3 Information Exchange Matrix reports
Using the defined activities as a basis, Information Exchange Requirements (IERs) express the relationship across the three basic entities of an operational architecture, such as activities, operational elements, and information flow, with a focus on the specific aspects of the information flow.
IERs identify who exchanges what information with whom, why the information is necessary, and in what manner. IERs identify the elements of war fighter information used in support of a particular activity and between any two activities. The node of the producing operational element and the node of the consuming operational element are identified. Relevant attributes of the exchange are noted. The specific attributes included are dependent on the objectives of the specific architecture effort, but may include the information media, such as data, voice, and video, quality, such as frequency, timeliness, and security, and quantity, such as volume and speed. Particular capabilities such as security level of communications may also be captured for each exchange. The emphasis in this product is on the logical and operational characteristics of the information, such as what information is needed by whom, from whom, and when.
When creating an OV-03 report, note exactly where the information is sourced from. The following are the requirements needed in order to create an OV-03 Information Exchange Matrix report properly.
It requires a logical flow (a needline) drawn between operational nodes on an OV-02 diagram.
It requires an ICOM arrow drawn between operational activities on an OV-05 diagram.
It requires the source operational node to have the source operational activity in its list of operational activities in order to identify the source activity in the generated report, and similarly for the destination activity. For the source and destination owning organization come from the owning organization reference in the operational node.
All other columns in the generated report are sourced from properties of the Information Exchange referenced from the logical flow.
Procedure
1 From the main toolbar select the Reports > DoDAF Reports.
2 Select the Operational Information Exchange Matrix (OV-3) report.
3 There are two types of source to choose from when running the report. Select either By Definition or By Diagram. If you select By Diagram, a list of both OV-2 diagrams and OV-5 diagrams are shown. You must select one diagram from each list to process a report.
This procedure shows additional OV-3 generation options that are available if BPMN modeling is not enabled in the encyclopedia: by definition and OV-2 diagrams. If BPMN modeling is enabled for the encyclopedia, then the report is available for OV-5 diagrams only.
4 Select the definitions, if available, or diagram types in the list; then click Run.
The report opens as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
