Creating OV-2 operational node connectivity diagrams
On OV-2 operational node connectivity diagrams, you model operational nodes, the needlines between them, and the characteristics of the information exchanged. Information exchange characteristics can be shown on the diagram, or in a report format, also known as the OV-3 information exchange matrix. The purpose of the operational node connectivity diagram is to make decisions about which systems are needed to satisfy the business needs of an organization or functional area.
1 Click File > New Diagram.
2 In the New Type for All dialog box, select OV-02 Op. Node Connectivity, and then click OK.
3 Type a name for the diagram; then click OK.
4 In the Classification list, select a value, and then click OK.
The diagram is created and listed in Explorer.
5 Draw operational nodes and the needlines between them. You can manually draw Needlines between nodes on an OV-2 diagram, using the Needline draw tool from the Draw toolbar. You can also automatically create Needline definitions in the repository by running the Generate Information Exchange Definitions utility.
To generate needlines, with the OV-02 diagram in focus click Draw > OV-02 Diagram Utilities > Draw Needlines. Needlines are automatically drawn between appropriate operational nodes on the OV-2 diagram.
6 In the Operational Node definition for each operational node, specify if the Node is a Service Provider, Service Consumer, or Unanticipated User of Services.
Starting with DoDAF 1.5, users are encouraged to build Net Centric architectures, and establish capabilities and services provided and used by the architecture.
