Specifying operational nodes as service providers, service consumers, or unanticipated users (ABM for DoDAF)
Once you have defined a list of service definitions, either by adding Service definitions directly to the encyclopedia or by building SV-4b diagrams, you must specify the Operational Node types.
According to the DoDAF 1.5 Net Centric Guidance, an Operational Node can be a Service Provider, a Service Consumer, and/or an Unanticipated User. In the ABM modeling feature, you are able to specify the Roles that perform an Operational Activity on an Operational Node. For DoDAF 1.5, you can extend this to add one or more of these Net Centric roles to the Operational Node.
1 If the roles are not currently available, create new role definitions in the encyclopedia called Service Provider, Service Consumer, and Unanticipated User. To create the new definitions, do this:
Click Dictionary > New Definition.
In the dialog box that opens, double-click the Role type.
In the new Role definition, type the following name:
Service Provider
Click OK.
To create the two additional roles, repeat steps a through d. At step c, substitute the names Service Consumer, and then Unanticipated User.
2 To open the Matrix Browser, click View > Matrix Browser.
3 Double-click Operational Node to Operational Activity Matrix.
4 In the wizard, to accept default settings and open the matrix, click Next; then click Finish.
5 Right-click a cell that contains “X”, which denotes a relationship between an Operational Node and an Operational Activity; then select Edit Cell Definition.
6 In the intersection cell definition, you can specify the roles that perform the Operational Activity on the Operational Node.
You can also specify if the roles of Service Provider, Service Consumer, or Unanticipated User are applied to this Operational Node/Operational Activity pair by clicking Choices, selecting roles in the Select and Drag dialog box, and then dragging the selection to the Role field.
Example
This is an example of a matrix with an OpNodeActivity definition dialog box open. Roles are being selected to drag to the Role field.
