An Organizational Unit is any formally defined subject of an enterprise which exists for a specific business purpose. It represents how a business is organized in terms of people.

Within System Architect, the Organizational Unit is a definition that includes a list of competencies (see Assigning Competencies and Teams to Roles performed in that unit. For example, a n Organizational Unit could be a department of such as Sales, Resources and Management, or Reception. Roles in the Sales organizational unit might be Account Manager, Telemarketer, Regional Manager, Sales Engineer, and so on. In each Role, you can describe the Competencies needed to perform the Role.

The Organizational Unit is depicted in a number of diagrams. You can create a hierarchy of organizational units in the Organization charts for enterprise architectures (or “org chart”). You can also show Organizational Units as Swimlanes in Process Charts, Process Map diagrams, Flow diagrams for the Application Model, and UML Activity diagrams.
