A process thread is a set of activities the enterprise performs in response to a single event. Within a process thread are performed elementary business processes. Process threads usually produce a result.

You can classify a process thread as major or minor: major process threads represent most of the work the enterprise does, the value it adds to its products, or its potential for improvement. They are few in number and receive sooner and greater attention than Minor Process Threads. Most process threads are minor; there might be hundreds of minor process threads in an organization.

The graphical workflow of a process thread is represented by one or more Process Chart diagrams. Alternatively, you can use Process Map diagrams. The process thread that a Process Chart represents is added to the diagram properties of the Process Chart. All events, elementary business processes, and results drawn on the Process Chart diagram represent the Process Thread.

The process decomposition diagram enables you to create a hierarchy of Process Threads and the Elementary Business Processes that belong to them. The hierarchy can be created by updating the Elementary Business Processes that belong to Process Threads.

Elementary Business Processes can be associated to Process Threads via the matrix editor as well. You can view the current relationship, as established in Process Chart and Process Decomposition diagrams, or create new or edit the existing relationships.
