L5 – Logical States
The L5 – Logical States viewpoint of NAF v4 is a state machine diagram that allows you to model the states of the architecture and transitions between states, within the context of the underlying UAF domain metamodel.
State: The state of the architecture corresponds to an OperationalActivityEdge, wherein the state of the architecture has Resources.
Transition: That state is transformed by an OperationalActivity into another state (with different Resources).
One easy way to model this viewpoint is to:
1 Open the Choices dialog (right-mouse click on diagram workspace and select Choices) – and select-and-drag OperationalActivityEdges already created in the encyclopedia onto the diagram workspace.
2 Optionally select Format, Symbol Format > Line Style and choose the line style – usually Elliptical Arcs, or Straight – Any Orientation work well for a state-machine diagram. See Important Tips on Line Drawing Mode for advice on how to draw Elliptical Arcs.
3 Build transitions between the OperationalActivityEdges (represented as circular state nodes) – the transitions are actually the OperationalActivities needed in the architecture.
