Lists the fixed server roles for the current server. You can assign roles to users on the server, assuming you possess proper administrative rights. Some of the listed roles are System Administrators, Security Administrators, Server Administrators, and so on. Roles help administrators manage server and database security. Roles are configured with certain permissions, and are then given to members. Any member of a role has all the permissions inherent to that role.
To assign a server role to a user
1 Select Server, Roles. This brings up the Server Role Properties dialog.
2 From the menu select the server role that you want to assign a login to.
3 Select the checkbox next to the login name from the Specify which logins are members of this role field.
4 Click OK.
To assign a server role to a user through the Logins dialog
You may also select the server role through the Logins dialog and specify the roles through the Server Role tab.
1 Select Server, Logins. Highlight a Login name and select Edit Properties.
2 In the Login Properties dialog box, click the Server Role tab.
3 Select Server Role. Server roles are used to grant server wide security privileges to a login field.
