Defining card, column, and punch code specifications
Metadata Model to Quantum gives you a number of ways to define card, column, and punch code specifications:
Manually, by double-clicking each variable in the Metadata Model to Quantum window and entering the details in the dialog box, which then opens.
Automatically, by choosing Allocate Cols and Punches from the Tools menu.
Using the data map feature to export the specifications as a .csv file, which you can read and edit in Excel, and subsequently import back into Metadata Model to Quantum. However, this method must be used with extreme caution.
After allocations have been made, you can use the shortcut menu in the Metadata Model to Quantum window to change the card allocation of one or more selected variables, or to reallocate columns to one or more selected variables from a specified starting column. You can also use the shortcut menu in the Manual Allocation dialog box to change the column offset for more than one element at once. For more information, see Metadata Model to Quantum shortcut menu.
In practice, you often use a combination of these methods. When you run Allocate Cols and Punches, you can choose whether or not to overwrite any allocations that already exist. You can use the Check Cols and Punches command to check whether you have inadvertently defined card, column, or punch definitions that are invalid or that overlap each other.
