Checking IDEF diagrams for rule violations (NAF)
You can use the Rules Check feature to search an IDEF0 or IDEF3 diagram for rule violations. After running the check, a report is displayed that describes any errors that are found.
Examples of IDEF0 errors include ICOM arrows that have not been defined or activity boxes that lack process description definitions. IDEF3 diagram rule violations include links (line symbols) that have not been defined and operational activities that lack process description definitions.
1 Open the diagram that you want checked.
2 Click Reports, then click one of the following commands, which are made available based upon the type of diagram that has focus:
IDEF0 Rules Check
IDEF3 Rules Check
3 If you are prompted to save the diagram, click Yes.

A report file is generated. For each error, the report gives the rule number, a brief explanation of the violation, and the name and type of the symbol in error. You can print the report.
The rules check feature also flags the errors directly on the diagram. For each error, a circle is placed at the lower-right corner of the violating symbol, with a rule number, such as R1, in the middle of the circle. If more than one error has been found for a symbol, an asterisk is added to the rule number. The report lists these additional errors along with their explanations.
You can clear online error indicators from the diagram when you are finished viewing them. To clear errors, click Reports > Clear Errors.
Note You can also leave the error indicators in place. They can be saved with the diagram if you want to come back and look at them later. They also appear on the output if you print the diagram.
