Identify and specify architecture principles for TOGAF
Once you have performed steps 1 – 3 of the preliminary phase, you are ready to define a set of architecture principles in System Architect that are based on the business principles of the enterprise.
Prerequisite 
First, gather existing Architecture Principles, if any.

Procedure
1 In the TOGAF Framework Browser, click Preliminary: Frameworks and Principles.
2 In the dialog box that opens, click the Preliminary Phase: define principles tab.
3 Right-click Definitions; then click New.
4 In the Select New Type for Preliminary Phase dialog box, select Principle; then click OK.
5 Type a name for the new definition; then click OK.
6 In the Dictionary Object - Principle dialog box, type a statement that defines the new principle.
7 In the Type of Principle list, select either Current or New.
8 Type an effective date for the implementation of the principle, in this format:
mm/dd/yyyy
9 Specify information on additional tabs of the dialog box, such as Reference Documents.
10 Click OK.

Identify additional Architecture Principles as needed.
You might choose to capture and possibly restate Business Principles, Business Goals, and Business Drivers by creating or modifying the following additional definitions for this phase:
Business Enterprise Direction
Business Objective
Business Process Direction
Goal
