Creating application communication diagrams
The Application Communication diagram is built during Phase C: Information System Architectures of the TOGAF ADM.
In this diagram you gain a global understanding of the following concepts:
your logical entities
the business services that consume that data, and the business services that data provide
the Logical Application Components that realize those services
the Application Interfaces that Logical Application Components communicate with.
Prerequisite
This diagram presents a global picture of the interrelationships of the following artifacts. Before building this diagram, you should already have created the following definition types as part of your architecture:
Application Interfaces
Business Services
Entities
Logical Application Components
Procedure
1 Relate the artifacts above to one another appropriately, using properties within their definition, and also by these matrices:
Business Service to Entity matrix
Business Service to Logical Application Component matrix
Application to Application Interface matrix
2 Create a new diagram of type Explorer using standard techniques to create a new diagram.
3 In the TOGAF 9 Viewpoint property, select Application Communication Diagram from the list.
4 With the diagram open and in focus, select View > Heat Map Manager to access the sets of analytics that you can run on the diagram to build the view.
5 Populate the diagram with pertinent artifacts by running one or more of the provided Explorer Object Reports. For this diagram, the following are available:
Application Interfaces
Business Services
Entities
Logical Application Components
6 Show interrelationships between artifacts by running one or all of the following Explorer Relationship Reports from the Heat Map Manager:
Business Service to Business Service (Communicates)
Business Service to Business Service (Is Dependent)
Business Service to Logical Application Component (Is Realized)
Logical Application Component to Application Interface (Communicates Via)
Logical Application Component to Application Interface (Communicates With)
Logical Application Component to Entity (Communicates With)
Next
You can generate ancillary Explorer Relationship reports. The following reports are generic and are available in the Heat Map Manager of all Explorer diagrams:
All Immediate Uses Relationships
Business Processes Related to Org Units
