Creating platform decomposition diagrams
You create the platform decomposition diagram during Phase D of the TOGAF ADM, Technology Architecture.
Prerequisite
This diagram presents a global picture of the interrelationships of the following artifacts. Before building this diagram, you should have already configured your encyclopedia to include iRMA and have created the following definition types as part of your architecture:
Application Components
Logical Technology Components
Physical Application Components
Physical Technology Components
Platform Services
Technologies
Relate the artifacts above to one another appropriately, using properties within their definition, and also the following matrix:
Physical Application Component to Physical Technology Component
In this diagram, you get a global view of the following:
the Application Components that you are deploying, and the Physical Application Components that realize them
the Physical Technology Components that support those Physical Application Components
the Logical Technology Components that realize those Physical Technology Components
the Technologies that those Logical Technology Components use
the Platform Services that those Logical Technology Components supply.
Procedure
1 Create a new diagram of type Explorer using standard techniques to create a new diagram.
2 In the TOGAF 9 Viewpoint property, select Platform Decomposition Diagram from the list.
3 With the diagram open and in focus, select View, Heat Map Manager to access the sets of analytics that you can run on the diagram to automatically build the view.
4 Populate the diagram with pertinent artifacts by running one or more of the provided Explorer Object Reports. For this diagram, the following are available:
Application Components
Logical Technology Components
Physical Application Components
Physical Technology Components
Platform Services
Technologies
5 Show interrelationships between artifacts by running one or all of the following Explorer Relationship Reports from the Heat Map Manager:
Application Component to Platform Service
Logical Technology Component to Platform Service
Physical Application Component to Physical Technology Component
Platform Service to Physical Application Component
Platform Service to Physical Technology Component
Technology to Platform Service
Next
You can generate ancillary Explorer Relationship reports. The following reports are generic and are available in the Heat Map Manager of all Explorer diagrams:
All Immediate Uses Relationships
Business Processes Related to Org Units
Diagram Depicts
IDEF0 Hierarchies
