XML is the eXtensible Markup Language that provides a standard format for data exchange. You can export all information from the repository, or encyclopedia, to XML format, and you can import information in XML format into an encyclopedia. What is generated (or imported) is called an XML instance document.

The instance document contains the data, or information, you are concerned with: in this case all of the information you have modeled in System Architect.
