Decomposition is a generalized diagramming technique that can be used to supplement the formalized structured analysis and design methodologies in a variety of ways.
One common use of a decomposition diagram is the organization chart. Information-engineering functional decomposition diagrams can be created using the function symbol. Another typical use is the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for project management. System Architect enhances the capabilities of the decomposition diagramming technique by including other systems analysis concepts, such as leveling and the data dictionary. By adding values to properties such as Start Date, End Date, Resources Required, and so on, it is possible to provide a rich project management supplement using the WBS.
The decomposition diagram offers no special functions that are not included in other diagramming styles or methodologies. It is a generic tool that will take care of analysis jobs not suited to any of the more rigid diagramming techniques.
The Draw Menu for the Decomposition Diagram is used to create new decomposition diagrams or to modify diagrams created by System Architect in any of the data flow diagrams. Decomposition diagrams can be generated automatically using the Auto-Decomposition diagram type.
If the diagram was created using a release of System Architect prior to version 3.0, the symbols can be converted to those used with the current version, using the Draw > Convert Structure menu command.
