Working with variables
You can change how variables appear in your tables in a number of ways. For example:
Changing the appearance of variables and categories
Changing a variable’s label
Changing a category label
Changing the category order in a variable
To sort a table on a row or column
Adding and combining categories in a variable
Combining categories
Creating nets
Combining categories in a grid
Banding a numeric variable
Autocoding a text variable
Adding a category based on another variable
Adding a category that is calculated from other categories
Adding summary information to variables
Adding summary statistics to a numeric variable
Adding summary statistics to a categorical variable
Adding summary statistics to a grid
Removing categories from a variable or from appearing in a table
You can remove the categories that appear in a variable. You can do this using a number of different methods, depending on what you want to achieve:
Deleting categories
To create or change a table filter
Hiding categories
To suppress rows or columns
Removing categories from a table
Creating new variables
As well as modifying existing variables, you can also create new variables:
Creating variables
Copying a variable
Merging categorical variables
Merging a categorical and a numeric variable
Creating a summary statistic table
From release 4.5, new variables and changes you make to existing variables are saved in the Table Document (.mtd) file and apply to the current table document only, not to the whole project. When you share a table document with colleagues, they can see the variable edits you have made. When you create a new table document, the variables revert to their original form. If you want variable edits to apply to all your table documents, you can create a template document that includes the variable edits. Any new table documents created using the template will automatically include the variable edits. See Managing template table documents for more information.
